JUDGES’ BIOGRAPHIES 2025

CONFORMATION JUDGES

JEFFERY BAZELL, OHIO, USA

Jeff Bazell is the 3rd generation dog show enthusiast. His grandfather bred Black and Tan Coonhounds, his grandmother and father were heavily involved in Chow Chows and Jeff finished his first champion, a Pekingese purchased from Nigel Aubrey-Jones, at the age of 9 by winning a specialty. His involvement in Brussels Griffons began at age 12 and continues to the present, with over 1000 titled dogs bred, co-bred or shown by the St John Kennel. During the 1980's he bred many champion Newfoundlands including putting multiple group and best in show wins on two male Landseers. As teenager he showed Afghans for Kay Finch in California, owned and showed many Kingsmark Greyhounds and has international experience with many sighthound breeds.

He has been judging for over 25 years and has enjoyed judging all over the world along with his husband, Jeff Kestner. The Jeffs also have a new found love in the Lancashire Heeler breed and are actively opening a breeding program to help introduce this wonderful breed to North America.

Jeff is a garden designer, plant breeder and nursery owner and has won over 100 international design awards including the Queen's Gold Medal for Horticulture. He has been a featured designer at the Floriade in the Netherlands, the Ameriflora in the US and the Royal Horticultural Society Chelsea Flower Show. He has also taught in design schools at the university level and is a former special needs kindergarten teacher.

RITA BIDDLE, MICHIGAN, USA

My name is Rita J. Biddle, Esq.  I got my first Great Dane in the 1960s, and in the early 1980s the Akita came into my life.  I’ve bred and shown both breeds.  My last Dane passed in 1997 and now I just have an 8-year-old male Akita left.  He is the 10th generation of my breeding.

I’ve had success in the show ring with both breeds, achieving many championships and rankings over the years.  In the COVID years I began working on Obedience and Rally with my Akita and we achieved many titles.  I can’t imagine life without a dog.  They bring so much joy to one’s existence.

I began judging matches in the 80’s and now am approved to judge the Hound, Working, Non-Sporting Groups, and half of the Herding Group, BIS, JS, and all of the groups for Owner Handled.  I’ve had the honor of judging all over the US, Canada, the UK, Denmark and Mexico and have turned down assignments in the Far East and India (too far to travel alone).  I’ve judged many national and regional specialties.

I’ve also been very active in club activities having served as past president of the Akita Club of America, past vice president of the United States Neapolitan Club, various officer and show positions (including a long-time delegate to the AKC) in Ingram County Kennel Club, and member of the Shiba Club of America.

I am currently on the AKC Board of Directors and will finish my 8th year in March.  I Chair the AKC Reunite which provides microchips, partners with kennel clubs to provide disaster trailers, and partners with police departments and kennel clubs to fund police dogs.  I also sit on the AKC Detection Dog Task Force which is involved in helping breeders breed and train dogs for detection work.

My work career was in law enforcement, regulation, and finance.  I am a lawyer.  I am now retired and can devote all my time to doggy pursuits.  I love judging and, for me, there is nothing more thrilling than evaluating a dog against its standard, watching it move. and seeing it demonstrate the concept of “form follows function”.  It is extra rewarding to have a young dog, inexperienced dog or a nervous dog relax when I put my hands on them and tell them that it is alright and see them slowly gain confidence as I put them through their paces.

I have judged in Canada many times and look forward to being with you and your beautiful dogs once again.

BRIAN BOGART, NEW YORK, USA

In May 1970 when Brian and his younger brother Wade, were discussing what to do for Mother’s Day, the then 12-year-old Wade suggested they purchase a Miniature Poodle puppy as a gift.

Fourteen-year-old Brian, whose only source of income at the time was a paper route, said no. A few days later, Wade persuaded our mother Alice and they soon arrived at our home with a Miniature Schnauzer.

The show bug eventually “bit” us and we made a purchase hoping to improve the breed. In 1979, Brian entered Graduate School at the University of Tennessee; one of my professors in the Animal Science-Nutrition Department was Dr Karl Barth of Karlshof Miniature Schnauzer fame. He suggested that we get the best brood bitch we could afford. We did just that.

Under the AKC Registered Name Prefix, SUMERWYND, Wade & I have amassed over 80 AKC Conformation Champions, 7 Top Producing Sires and 6 Top Producing Dams, BIS Winners on Three Continents. I commenced judging in 1998 and have had the privilege of judging throughout Australia, New Zealand, Japan and USA.

I have had a strong connection with German Shorthaired Pointers and was honoured to judge a specialty for the NSW GSH Pointer Club.  This is a privilege usually reserved for a breeder judge.  I have also judged “Gundog” (as we call them) specialties in Queensland and New Zealand. Again, an honour for a “hound” person.

I am absolutely honoured and delighted to adjudicate at the Erie Shores Kennel Club Shows

BONNIE THRELFALL, NORTH CAROLINA, USA

I grew up “in dogs”, showing my father's Labradors in the breed, obedience, and junior showmanship rings. We were honoured to win the Labrador National in 1964. At the same time, I had an Irish Water Spaniel of my own, who became the breed's first Ch. U.D., and was the great-grandmother of Irishtocrat, the 1979 Westminster BIS winner.

I have owned and bred English Cocker Spaniels since 1968, maintaining an average of three to five, all kept as pets. Edgewood English Cockers have, at one time or another, won every major award offered at the National, often more than once. One of my “pets” is one of the top sires in the breed, with 121 champions, including five BIS winners, four National winners, and 14 top producers.

I have been a member of the English Cocker Spaniel Club of American since 1969, was a founding member of the Owner-Handler Association (my father being its first president), a founding member of the Delaware Valley English Cocker Club, a founding member of the Cary Kennel Club (all-breed), and a member of the Seaboard English Cocker Club.

After being employed as an assistant to Robert and Jane Forsyth, I was a professional handler for 15 years, finishing over 450 champions in numerous breeds in all seven groups. It was an honour, a pleasure, and an education to work for some of the top breeders in the country in a number of breeds. In 2000, I was approved to judge all Sporting breeds, and now judge all Hound breeds and 15 breeds in the remaining five groups.

I have judged National specialties for seven breeds (the English Cocker National twice), Westminster, the AKC/Eukanuba National Championship, an FCI show in Sweden, and awarded C.C.s in my breed in England.

LEIF-HERMAN WILBERG, NORWAY

My involvement in dogs goes back to 1959 when our family bought our first dog, a German Shepherd. We bred and showed German Shepherds for 10 years before we imported our first Pembroke corgi from England.

We had a very successful start with our new breed as our first Pembroke ended up as Dog of the Year all breeds in Norway 1968. Since then, we have made up more than 150 homebred national champions, and 40 international, and also many champions in other countries, many world and section winners, as well as numerous group and best in show winners.

Since the Norwegian Welsh Corgi Klubb started the Corgi of the Year competition in 1974, our dogs either homebred or imports have won the title 39 times.

Our most famous dog, Int.Ch. Siggens’s Hi Fi, who was Dog of the Year all breeds in Norway in 1983, was the first imported Pembroke ever to win a CC in England.

We started breeding Pembrokes with short tails in 1989 when Norway, as the first country in the world, introduced the docking ban. It took us about ten years to come back to the quality we bred before the docking ban, but are quite proud to say that bobtails bred by us have been made up champions in the major corgi countries like England, USA, Australia, Russia and all over Europe. We have won many groups and BIS and competing among the top dogs all breeds in Norway for many years. Our kennel received the Norwegian Kennel Club’s top breeders award in 2002 the first year it was awarded.

In my younger days I used to handle many different breeds for other people. In addition to making up champions in my two main breeds, I have made up champions in poodles, boxers, rottweilers, doberman, keeshonds, whippets, golden retrievers, labrador retrievers.

I have held all different positions in the Norsk Welsh Corgi Klubb, and have received the clubs honorary award “the docked tails order” for my work. I served on the Norwegian Kennel Klub general committee from 1996 – 2006.

I was chairman of the NKK committee for judging education and examinations for 20 years and the representative for the NKK in the FCI committee for judging education for the same period. I have received NKK’s golden award for my work.

In February 2006 I was elected President of the FCI Show Commission and resigned in 2014.

I have been on the committee of the Norwegian Dog Judges Associations for many years, also chairman for three years. and have received their golden honor for my work. I have been an FCI judge since 1976, and was passed as an FCI All Breed Judge in 2010. I have judged at breed specialties in many breeds in many countries, among which many corgi specialties in England, USA, Russia, Poland, Finland, Sweden, Norway, Denmark, Germany, Chech Republic, Slovenia, Italy, Hungary etc. I regularly judge at the major shows all around the world, among them I have judged at many World and Section Shows, Crufts, Sydney Royal etc.

I was very honoured to be elected by the PWCCA members to judge the American National Specialty 2019. which has been one of my most precious judging appointments.

KATE DARBYSHIRE, CHESTERVILLE, ONTARIO

I started in purebred dogs in 1990. I have had 3 bullmastiffs (including breeding 2 litters before I recognized that I did not have the time to have a proper breeding program).
